Botanists have figured out how to design plants sensitive to bomb materials. Once these plants pick up on the offending chemicals, their leaves change the type of radiation they emit under infrared light, so that nearby smartphone sensors can pick up on it. This is neat, but in my opinion, pretty worthless compared to a good ‘ol fashioned bomb dog. We have one that comes by my office building on Fridays, so my friends at the reception desk now call me and say, “Mr. Heaton–your appointment is here” when she and the security guy show up. Then I look at my manager and say, “Oh, I better take that,” before heading downstairs to play with the Labrador Retriever for a few minutes. Plants are a lot less cuddly and happy to see you. Probably the only upshot to terrorism is the increasing amount of bomb dogs in American offices.
